Background of the study
Urban flooding has become a recurrent challenge in many Nigerian cities, with poor drainage systems being a major contributor. In Ado-Ekiti, rapid urbanization combined with inadequate drainage infrastructure has led to frequent flooding episodes that disrupt socio-economic activities and damage property. Recent investigations (Olatunji, 2023; Musa, 2024) reveal that insufficient planning and maintenance of drainage networks significantly exacerbate flood risks. This study examines historical trends in urban flooding, infrastructural deficiencies, and the socio-economic impacts of these events on communities. It considers how climate change, unplanned urban sprawl, and environmental mismanagement contribute to the problem. The role of municipal authorities, the effectiveness of drainage policies, and potential technological innovations in water management are critically analyzed. By integrating engineering studies with urban planning frameworks, the research aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the underlying issues, while also suggesting practical interventions for flood mitigation (Olatunji, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Ado-Ekiti experiences severe urban flooding due to neglected drainage systems. The failure to maintain existing infrastructure coupled with rapid urban expansion has resulted in recurrent flood events that affect residential and commercial areas. The inadequacy of current drainage designs and poor policy enforcement further complicate flood management. This research seeks to determine the primary factors contributing to the failures in drainage systems and to evaluate how improved infrastructure and policy reform can alleviate urban flooding in the area (Musa, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the current condition of drainage systems in Ado-Ekiti.
To evaluate the correlation between drainage deficiencies and urban flooding.
To recommend infrastructural and policy improvements.
Research questions:
What is the current status of drainage infrastructure in Ado-Ekiti?
How do drainage deficiencies contribute to urban flooding?
What strategies can reduce flood risks through better drainage management?
Research Hypotheses:
Poor drainage infrastructure significantly increases urban flooding.
Policy gaps contribute to inadequate drainage maintenance.
Technological upgrades will mitigate flood impacts.
Significance of the study
This research will assist local government and urban planners in developing effective flood control strategies by highlighting the critical role of drainage infrastructure. The findings are expected to inform policy reforms and infrastructural investments, ultimately reducing the socio-economic impacts of urban flooding in Ado-Ekiti (Olatunji, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to analyzing the impact of drainage system deficiencies on urban flooding in Ado-Ekiti Local Government Area.
Definitions of terms:
Urban Flooding: The inundation of urban areas due to excessive rainfall and inadequate drainage (Musa, 2024).
Drainage Systems: Infrastructure designed to remove excess surface water (Olatunji, 2023).
Urbanization: The process of population concentration in urban areas (Musa, 2024).
